1954 Gibson Les Paul Goldtop

1954 Gibson Les Paul Goldtop

A stunning example of one of the most iconic electric guitars ever made. The vibrant gold finish has aged beautifully with remarkable lacquer checking and greening in the metal flake. The perfect amount of character and wear.

Let's get the relatively minor issues out of the way first. There have been other tuners on at some stage and post holes have been slightly enlarged but there are no extra screw holes. The pots are DiMarzio's, and there is evidence of different pickups being installed in the past - there are two extra holes in the neck cavity and a very small bit of wood chiseled out (see pics). Three extra screw holes are also in the bridge cavity. It has also had a refret and is fitted with a good quality repro switch tip.

The body is solid Mahogany with a carved Maple top. The wraparound tailpiece offers a direct, resonant response that’s tightly linked to the player's touch. The P-90 pickups sound superb - delivering raw, open, and harmonically rich sounds that can go from smooth and warm to biting and aggressive with a turn of the volume knob or the dynamics of a player's touch. This is just as a vintage Goldtop should be.

The neck has a classic ’50s chunky profile with not too much shoulder giving a slight V feel in the hand. Aided by a refret this guitar plays brilliantly well, the neck filling the hand comfortably and offering a superb playing experience.

All in all this is a truly inspiring guitar to play. With tone to match its look, this 1954 Les Paul Goldtop also comes complete with its original brown Lifton hard case. Whether you’re a vintage aficionado, a player seeking unmistakable P-90 magic and iconic Goldtop looks, or a collector looking for a visually stunning piece with real pedigree, this Goldtop delivers in every category.
