1962 Gibson SG Special, Cherry

1962 Gibson SG Special, Cherry

A superb early SG Special, this 1962 example is a clean, all-original wide nut (pre'65) model with no breaks or repairs and all the character you’d hope for from one of Gibson’s most enjoyable early-’60s solidbodies.

Finished in its original Cherry, this one has faded just enough to give it a stunning vintage look, while still retaining plenty of depth and colour. It has come to us from the previous owner of 25 years and has clearly been very well looked after, having barely left its case in recent times. Overall, it is a particularly attractive example, with honest ageing and no breaks or repairs so often associated with these early SG-bodied Gibsons.

This is also the first year for the optional Maestro vibrato, and it works very well, holding tuning nicely and adding to its versatility as an instrument. The rest of the hardware and plastics are present and correct, including the compensated/lightning bridge, 3-a-side Kluson tuners, reflector knobs and the classic early SG “angel wing” pickguard.

It retains its correct pair of P-90 pickups, both reading a healthy 8.1k, along with the original wiring, untouched solder joints and matching Centralab pots dating to week 32 of 1962. It's an excellent sounding example, with plenty of bite and cut as you'd expect from the bridge pickup, and an excellent warm, woody tone at the neck.

The neck feels great to play. Unlike some of the very slim earlier SG profiles that can feel almost blade-like in the hand, this one has a comfortable medium profile with a 42.5mm nut width, measuring 20.8mm deep at the 1st fret and 23.1mm at the 12th. It feels nicely balanced: substantial enough to get hold of, but still fast and very easy to play.

The SG Special has become increasingly appreciated in recent years, and it is easy to see why. Lightweight, resonant, versatile and full of character, they offer a huge amount of vintage Gibson tone. This is a beautiful, original example with the right spec, no repairs, killer pickups and a very comfortable neck.

It comes with a modern Gibson hard case.
