1963 Fender Tremolux Head "Mean Fiddler" + 2 Cabs
1963 Fender Tremolux head with a pair of matching 2x10" cabinets in white tolex – a fantastic looking and sounding setup. This one is an export model with changeable voltage, making it versatile for use anywhere. Under the hood it runs on a pair of 6V6 power valves, a GZ34 rectifier, and a complement of 12AX7 and 7025 preamp tubes, and the cabs retain their original Oxford speakers, except for one which has been replaced with a Celestion .
By 1962 the Tremolux circuit was the 6G9-B, rated at around 35 watts. These brownface circuits are highly regarded for their character: tighter and more defined than the earlier tweeds, but with more warmth and midrange presence than the blackface amps that soon followed. They deliver a wonderful balance of clarity and grit – clean enough for sparkling articulation, but with a smooth, musical break-up when pushed. The onboard vibrato adds a beautiful pulsing dimension, deeper and more organic than the later blackface versions.
This example remains fairly clean, both head and cabs, and the presence of the original matching 2x12" cabinets really makes it a complete package. The white tolex has aged nicely, giving it that unmistakable early-‘60s Fender aesthetic. A very cool and versatile amp setup from Fender’s golden age, and one that really highlights the best of the brownface era.
