1963 Gibson J-45, Sunburst

1963 Gibson J-45, Sunburst

A superb example of Gibson’s most iconic acoustic, this 1963 J-45 delivers everything you’d expect from an early-’60s slope-shouldered classic: responsiveness, balance, and that unmistakable warm, woody thump that has made the model a songwriting staple for generations.

This J-45 features its original Sitka spruce, sunburst top paired with mahogany back and sides, producing a mellow low end, clear midrange, and a sweet, rounded top end. The classic 1963 neck profile is comfortable and fast, with the full nut width that many players prefer over later-decade variations. The rosewood fingerboard and bridge add richness and clarity to the guitar’s harmonic response.

Cosmetically, the guitar shows some tasteful vintage character showing a few dings and some checking across the top, gentle playwear, and a warm, naturally aged sunburst finish. Structurally it is solid, with no cracks or repair concerns, and maintains excellent playability with a responsive setup that suits strumming or fingerstyle.

It has had other tuners fitted at some stage and currently has some mid/late 60's Kluson Deluxe's. There is a plate on the back of the headstock that has the serial number on for some reason and the bridge saddle has been replaced with a newer compensated type for better intonation, with an unusual repair to the B string saddle using a wooden insert. Strap buttons have also been replaced.

Tonally, this J-45 has truly opened up over its 60+ years. It's resonant, dynamic, and full of that dry, vintage Gibson character. A wonderful example for anyone chasing that authentic early-’60s Gibson acoustic sound.

Includes a non-original hard case.
